A viewer submits a line through the Twitch Extension. The desktop client can play the result on stream or route it through a virtual microphone into Discord or compatible in-game voice chat. - StreamElements alerts: Choose this route when subscriptions, tips and cheers run through its AlertBox.
- StreamElements commands: Its separate Loyalty and Stream Store route supports chat-triggered redemption.
- ControlPlay: Consider it when viewer-written lines should become interactive actions that can reach the stream, Discord or compatible in-game voice chat. ControlPlay TTS is enabled per account during the current beta. Own Voice is a separate, invitation-only option.
- Keep the current provider: If it passes the checks below, switching may only add moving parts.

For ControlPlay, viewer-written TTS remains a Coin action. Optional Channel Points rewards can convert channel-specific points into Coins at a streamer-defined rate without generating revenue. Twitch does not permit direct Bits use for VOIP functionality or free-form viewer input, so neither direct Bits interactions nor Bits-enabled Coin packages are presented here as a TTS trigger. Eligible Affiliate and Partner channels may use permitted Bits experiences elsewhere in the Extension; the Twitch monetization guide explains that separate model.
How ControlPlay adds AI voice cloning and voice-chat routing
ControlPlay is an alternative workflow, not an integration with either vendor. Its distinctive path is:
Viewer text → library voice or AI clone of the streamer's own voice → stream output or virtual microphone → Discord or compatible in-game voice chat
A viewer writes a message through an action you enabled in the Twitch Extension. With a library voice, this works as viewer-triggered TTS. If the separate Own Voice option has been enabled for your account by invitation, AI generates the line as an imitation of your own voice. With the virtual microphone route enabled, teammates can hear that generated line in Discord or compatible in-game voice chat, not only viewers on the stream.
That makes the viewer part of the live situation. A submitted joke, mock callout or role-play line can arrive in your synthesized voice while you are playing with other people. It remains a TTS action that the streamer configured and enabled, not live access to the microphone or unrestricted control of the conversation. You decide which action is visible, which voice it uses and where the generated audio is routed.
The tradeoff is access and setup. You need the Windows client and an active Extension slot. ControlPlay TTS itself is enabled per account during the current beta. Own Voice is separate from normal TTS access, available by invitation only and not generally available. Before planning a migration, confirm which voices and routing modes appear in the current client for your account. TTS and voice-chat routing do not require ControlPlay's USB device; that hardware is only for game-input actions.
Only create a clone from your own voice samples. Review how those recordings will be processed and handled before uploading them, and tell teammates before routing synthesized speech into a shared call. Also test the target game's or voice app's microphone input separately, because routing support depends on the local audio configuration.

Set up Streamlabs TTS
- Add the Streamlabs Alert Box. In OBS Studio, copy its widget URL into a Browser Source.
- Open Alert Box in the Streamlabs dashboard and select Tips or Bits.
- Open Text-to-Speech settings, choose a voice, set the minimum tip amount where relevant, configure the anti-spam level and enable TTS.
- Review the profanity filter, custom blocked words and outcomes: replace words, hide the message or disable the alert.
- Test Tips and Bits separately, including their thresholds and variations.
Anti-spam can stop repeated characters but may cut normal messages short. Test several sentence lengths.
Set up StreamElements TTS
For event TTS, edit an overlay, add an AlertBox and open the relevant event. The official guide shows subscriptions, tips and cheers. Enable TTS, select a voice and choose whether to announce the action before the message.
Review enabled variations because a match can override the default alert.
Command-triggered TTS uses a separate Loyalty and Stream Store path: bot, command, redemption and Store Redemption widget. Check those stages before changing OBS audio.
Copy the overlay URL into an OBS Browser Source and match its dimensions. Configure profanity protection, viewer filtering, anti-spam and optional manual tip approval, then reload and test.
OBS audio checklist for either provider
OBS Browser Source can carry audio. Check the signal at each stage and record before going live.
- Trigger a test event with a neutral sentence.
- Confirm the intended Browser Source is active and its mixer meter moves.
- Check mute state, stream-track assignment and monitoring.
- Record and replay a test. Headphone monitoring alone does not prove viewers receive it.
- Balance speech against your microphone and game.

Resetting a Streamlabs API token invalidates widget links, so reserve it for later. Change one stage at a time and repeat the same test.
Moderate spoken viewer messages
Twitch holds broadcasters responsible for content on their stream and expects good-faith steps against third-party abuse. TTS therefore needs moderation from the start.
Twitch AutoMod covers chat. Vendor controls cover their alerts, tips and TTS. Configure each input path instead of relying on one filter.
Test a normal sentence, repeated characters and a harmless blocked term. Give moderators a clear stop procedure.
For Own Voice, use only the streamer's own samples and do not present synthesized speech as a real statement made by another person. Tell voice-chat participants that generated viewer lines may enter the call.
Choose the setup that passes your trigger, moderation and OBS recording checks with the fewest moving parts.
